Tóm tắt · In brief

Home of the nearly seven-million-year-old Toumaï fossil and heart of the Kanem–Bornu empire, Chad stretches from the Sahara to southern savanna, its modern history dominated by civil wars and military rulers.

History of Chad

Toumaï and Kanem–Bornu

In 2001 scientists found in the Djurab desert the Toumaï skull, one of the oldest known hominins. Rock art on the Ennedi and Tibesti plateaus records a time when the Sahara was green. From around the ninth century the Kanem empire formed around Lake Chad, embraced Islam in the eleventh century and controlled trans-Saharan trade; its centre later shifted to Bornu. The kingdoms of Baguirmi and Ouaddaï also flourished through trade and slave raiding to the south.

The French conquest

In the late nineteenth century the warlord Rabih az-Zubayr conquered much of the region before French forces defeated and killed him at the Battle of Kousséri in 1900. Chad became part of French Equatorial Africa. The colonial state promoted cotton in the south, while the desert north was run largely by the military, creating deep disparities between the two. In the Second World War Chad, under Governor Félix Éboué, was the first colony to rally to de Gaulle’s Free France.

Civil wars and soldier-rulers

Chad became independent on 11 August 1960 under François Tombalbaye. The FROLINAT rebellion from 1966 began decades of civil war with Libyan and French interventions. Hissène Habré ruled from 1982; in 1987 Chadian troops in pickup trucks defeated Libya in the “Toyota War”. Habré was ousted by Idriss Déby in 1990 and later convicted of crimes against humanity in Senegal. Déby was killed in battle in 2021; his son Mahamat Idriss Déby took power and won the 2024 election.
