On October 29, 2026, OpenAI changed what its top ChatGPT plans include. Pro 100 and Pro 500 now get twice their previous Work and Codex allowance, a planned Pro 200 cut was canceled, and eligible Pro and Business subscribers can now claim monthly API credits to build their own apps.

Coffee summary

  • FACT: Pro 100 and Pro 500 now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance. Existing subscribers get it automatically.
  • FACT: OpenAI canceled the Pro 200 reduction announced on September 29. Pro 200 users on the lower allowance had it doubled to match the higher one.
  • FACT: Pro subscribers can claim $100, $200, or $500 a month in API credits, matching their plan tier.
  • FACT: The API credits expire at the end of each billing cycle and do not roll over.
  • OPINION: The API credits are the bigger deal for builders; the usage boost is the bigger deal for heavy Codex users.

What happened

According to OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes, the extra usage applies to Work (ChatGPT's agent for longer tasks) and Codex (its coding agent). Plus usage is unchanged. OpenAI also notes that a bigger allowance "does not guarantee twice as many completed tasks," because usage depends on the model, task, and settings.

Separately, eligible Pro and Business subscribers can now link their ChatGPT subscription to an OpenAI API organization and receive promotional credits each month.

The API credits, in plain numbers

Plan Monthly API credits
Pro 100 $100
Pro 200 $200
Pro 500 $500
Business Standard seat $20 per paid seat, pooled
Business Premium seat $100 per paid seat, pooled
Business workspace cap $500 per month total

Plus, free trials, Enterprise, and Edu are not eligible. Your paid subscription must be at least seven days old, and the ChatGPT and API accounts must use the same email address. One subscription links to one API organization.

Why it matters

Until now, a ChatGPT subscription and the API were two separate bills. This benefit lets a Pro user build a small app, script, or agent on the API without paying extra, up to the credit amount. Independent coverage, such as DeAI's daily brief, links the move to competition with Anthropic, which added a similar API credit for Claude Max and Team subscribers on October 7.

The Pro 200 reversal is also notable: OpenAI walked back a cut it had announced a month earlier, which suggests heavy users' feedback carried weight.

Who should care

  • Pro subscribers who code: more Codex room before you hit limits or buy credits.
  • Solo builders and small teams: free API budget for prototypes and internal tools.
  • Business admins: pooled credits for the workspace, but only the owner of both the workspace and the API organization can link them.

Limitations

  • Use it or lose it: monthly credits expire at the end of each billing cycle.
  • Not for Codex via API keys: the credits do not cover Codex usage through API keys, and they do not raise ChatGPT limits.
  • Rate limits still apply: credits do not lift request or token limits on your API organization.
  • Rollout: OpenAI says availability depends on the enabled cohort and country, so some users may not see the offer yet.
  • May change: OpenAI states the benefit "may change or be removed in the future."

What to do next

  1. Pro users: open Settings → Billing in ChatGPT and look for the API credits benefit.
  2. Pick the API organization carefully; changing the link later requires Support.
  3. Set a small first project, such as an automation for a repetitive task, so the credits do not expire unused.

AIImpish Take

This is a quiet but real price cut for power users. If you already pay for Pro, the API credits are free money for experiments, but only if you claim and use them each month. Casual Plus users get nothing new here, so there is no reason to upgrade just for this.
