Tóm tắt · In brief

Smaller than two square kilometres, Monaco has been ruled by the Grimaldi family for more than seven centuries, ever since a night in 1297 when one of them, disguised as a friar, talked his way into the fortress on the Rock.

Thân vương Albert I, nhà hải dương học, xây Bảo tàng Hải dương học và ban hành hiến pháp năm 1911. Thân vương Rainier III (1949–2005), người kết hôn với minh tinh Grace Kelly, đa dạng hóa kinh tế và mở rộng đất lấn biển. Monaco gia nhập Liên Hợp Quốc năm 1993; Albert II trị vì từ năm 2005.

History of Monaco

Ancient Monoikos and the Grimaldi raid

Greeks from Massalia called this rock Monoikos, linking it to a legend of Heracles, and it served as a harbour for Ligurians, Phoenicians and later Romans. In 1191 the Holy Roman Emperor granted the land to the Republic of Genoa, and in 1215 the Genoese built a fortress on the summit of the Rock. On 8 January 1297 François Grimaldi, an exiled Guelph, disguised himself as a Franciscan friar to get through the gate and seized the fortress. Two sword-bearing monks still appear on Monaco’s coat of arms, recalling that audacious beginning.

Between Spain, France and Sardinia

The Grimaldis lost and regained Monaco several times before securing their hold in the fifteenth century. To survive among great powers, the principality placed itself under Spanish protection from 1524; Honoré II was the first to use the title of Prince, and with the Treaty of Péronne in 1641 he switched to an alliance with France. Revolutionary France annexed Monaco in 1793, and the Prince’s Palace was used as a storehouse. After 1815 the principality was restored under the protection of the Kingdom of Sardinia, but in 1848 the towns of Menton and Roquebrune broke away, shrinking its territory to a sliver.

Monte Carlo and the modern principality

The Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861 ceded Menton and Roquebrune to France in exchange for recognition of Monaco’s sovereignty. Lacking farmland, Prince Charles III founded the Société des Bains de Mer in 1863 and moved the casino to the hillside later named Monte Carlo; a railway from Nice turned it into a playground for Europe’s elite. Prince Albert I, an oceanographer, built the Oceanographic Museum and granted a constitution in 1911. Prince Rainier III (1949–2005), who married film star Grace Kelly, diversified the economy and reclaimed land from the sea. Monaco joined the United Nations in 1993; Albert II has reigned since 2005.
