About two years after Apple Intelligence first launched, iPhone users in China are about to get Apple Intelligence. Apple says the first features will open for testing on November 4 with the latest iOS developer beta, followed by a public release with iOS 27.3 in December. The China version leans on a partnership with Alibaba, whose Qwen model will be available inside Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence.
Coffee summary
- FACT: Testing begins November 4 in the latest iOS developer beta; the public launch comes with iOS 27.3 in December.
- FACT: Features include Live Translation, Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, Clean Up in Photos, Genmoji, notification summaries, and Type to Siri.
- FACT: Alibaba’s Qwen will handle certain Siri requests and can write original content in Writing Tools.
- FACT: Siri AI and the other next-generation features Apple announced at WWDC 2026 are not included.
- FACT: The rollout is iPhone-only for now; other platforms need further regulatory approval.
What happened
Apple published the announcement on its China newsroom; the press release is dated October 31 in China, which was October 30 in the US. 9to5Mac and The Verge both reported it after MacRumors spotted the post.
Apple says the features run on generative models it built. Reuters reported in August that Apple trained its own large language model specifically for China, according to The Verge. Apple Intelligence was approved in China in July, after a long regulatory process.
What’s included
| Category | Features in the first China release |
|---|---|
| Language | Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone; Writing Tools (rewrite, proofread, summarize); Smart Reply |
| Photos | Clean Up, natural-language photo search, Memory movies from a description |
| Notifications and Mail | Notification summaries, priority notifications, Priority Mail, email summaries, Reduce Interruptions focus |
| Creativity | Genmoji |
| Siri | Type to Siri, better follow-up understanding, Qwen for certain requests |
| Audio | Summaries of transcribed recordings in Notes and Phone calls |
With Qwen, users can ask questions about photos and documents, including PDFs and presentations. They can access it by signing in to a Qwen account or using Sign in with Apple. This works much like Apple’s ChatGPT integration elsewhere.
Supported devices
Apple lists iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Duo, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. Siri and the device language must be set to a supported language; Apple’s footnote lists English and Simplified Chinese.
Live Translation for in-person conversations also works with supported AirPods, including AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 or later, paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
Why it matters
China has been a notable gap in Apple Intelligence availability since the features first launched. This release closes much of that gap, though without Apple’s newest Siri.
It also shows how Apple adapts AI to local rules: Apple’s own models for core features, plus a local partner (Alibaba) where outside chatbot knowledge is needed.
Who should care
- iPhone owners in China with a supported model.
- Developers in China building on Apple platforms, who can start testing in the beta.
- Travelers and expats who rely on Live Translation across English and Chinese.
- Investors and analysts tracking Apple’s position in China.
Limitations
- No Siri AI. The more capable, next-generation Siri is not part of this release.
- iPhone only. iPad and Mac support will follow only after “necessary approvals,” with no date.
- Beta first. November 4 is the start of testing, not the public release. Developer betas can have bugs.
- Hardware cutoff. Older iPhones, including the standard iPhone 15, are not on Apple’s list.
What to do next
- Check your model. Eligible phones are the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Air, and iPhone Duo.
- Wait for December unless you are a developer; the public iOS 27.3 release is the safer path.
- Set your language. Siri and device language must match a supported language.
- Decide on Qwen. Sign in to Qwen only if you want those extra answers; core features run on Apple’s models.
AIImpish Take
This is a pragmatic launch: the proven Apple Intelligence basics, delivered through Apple’s own models and Alibaba’s Qwen, without the newest Siri. For Chinese iPhone users it closes a long gap. For Apple, the harder test comes next: when, and how, it can bring Siri AI to China.
