On October 29, 2026, Microsoft expanded Copilot for finance work with more than 25 new finance skills and partner-built plugins. The update covers corporate accounting, capital markets, and everyday finance tasks, and it brings Excel directly into the Copilot app so you do not have to start in a spreadsheet.
Coffee summary
- FACT: Microsoft added 25+ finance skills and plugins across Copilot in Excel and Cowork, its agent for multistep work.
- FACT: New accounting capabilities (reconciliations, journal entries, variance reporting) are in Frontier, Microsoft's early-access program.
- FACT: The Capital Markets and Finance plugins for Cowork, and finance skills in Copilot in Excel, are generally available.
- FACT: Partner plugins include Intuit QuickBooks, Xero, Zoho Books, FactSet, Morningstar, Moody's, S&P Global, and others, rolling out through Microsoft's plugin registry.
- OPINION: The optional audit trail in Excel may matter more to finance teams than any single new skill.
What happened
Microsoft first added finance skills to Copilot in Excel in June 2026. This release goes broader. With "Office in Copilot," Excel is embedded inside the Copilot app, so you can analyze and edit workbooks without leaving Chat or Cowork. Microsoft says Work IQ grounds Copilot in company context such as a close calendar or deal-team conversations.
What each group gets
| Team | New capabilities | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Corporate accounting | Reconcile accounts, draft accruals and journal entries, explain results against plan | Frontier (early access) |
| Capital markets | Investment cases, trading comparables, LBO, DCF, and merger models, IC memos | Generally available (Cowork plugin) |
| Corporate finance / FP&A | Close review packages, forecast reviews, audit evidence packages | Generally available (Cowork plugin) |
| ERP users | Dynamics 365 ERP apps plugin for journal entries from system-of-record data | Beginning to roll out |
| Data teams | Fabric IQ, starting with Power BI reports and semantic models | Generally available in Cowork |
CLAIM: Microsoft says that in seven days of limited Insiders availability, more than 8,000 users invoked accounting skills over 44,000 times across 18,000+ Copilot conversations. These are usage figures, not accuracy or time-saved figures.
Why it matters
Finance work needs a paper trail. Microsoft is leaning into that: when you invoke an accounting capability in Excel, you can start an audit trail that records what Copilot changed and why. Copilot can also summarize who changed a workbook and when, and reverse individual edits without disturbing the rest of the file.
Microsoft also restates its data commitments: Copilot works only with content each user can access, honors permissions and sensitivity labels, and does not use prompts, responses, or documents to train its foundation models.
Who should care
- Accountants and controllers: month-end close, reconciliations, and journal entry prep.
- Bankers, PE, and research analysts: model building and memo drafting in Cowork.
- Small businesses on QuickBooks, Xero, or Zoho Books: partner plugins could connect your books to Copilot once they reach your tenant.
Limitations
- Early access: the headline accounting features are in Frontier, not general release.
- Extra licensing: Microsoft notes third-party plugins may need separate subscriptions, authentication, or admin approval.
- Review still required: Microsoft itself says finance professionals keep control of recommendations, approvals, and actions. AI-drafted journal entries must be checked before posting.
- Rollout timing: several plugins are only "beginning to roll out," so availability will vary by tenant.
What to do next
- Ask your Microsoft 365 admin whether your organization is in Frontier and which finance plugins are enabled.
- Pilot one low-risk workflow first, such as a variance commentary draft, and compare it with last month's manual version.
- Turn on the audit trail from day one so every AI change is reviewable.
AIImpish Take
Microsoft is betting that finance teams will trust AI if it shows its work. The audit trail and edit history are the right foundation; the real test will be accuracy on messy, real-world ledgers. Finance leaders should pilot it on reporting and commentary before letting it near anything that posts to the books.
