Historical overview: Samoa

Samoan Polynesian society, including matai leadership, preceded European imperial competition. The 1899 partition placed western islands under Germany and eastern islands under the United States.

New Zealand occupied the west in 1914 and later administered it under mandate and trusteeship arrangements. The Mau movement challenged colonial rule. Western Samoa became independent on 1 January 1962 and adopted the name Samoa in 1997. Samoa and American Samoa have separate political histories.
