Historical overview: Tonga

Tonga’s Lapita heritage and Polynesian maritime networks preceded the Tuʻi Tonga tradition. George Tupou I consolidated the nineteenth-century kingdom and promulgated the 1875 constitution.

A protection treaty with Britain followed in 1900, while Tonga retained its monarchy and domestic institutions. The protected relationship ended in 1970. Later political reforms expanded elected representation, with the 2010 election an important turning point. Tonga’s long institutional continuity differs from a simple colonial-to-independent chronology.
