Rus’, the Mongols and the rise of Moscow
The Kievan Rus’ state emerged in the ninth century and adopted Orthodox Christianity from Byzantium in 988. The thirteenth-century Mongol invasion fragmented the principalities; Moscow gradually gathered lands and threw off Golden Horde overlordship in the late fifteenth century. Ivan IV was crowned tsar in 1547 and expanded toward the Volga and Siberia.
The Russian Empire
The Romanov dynasty took the throne in 1613. Peter the Great pursued European-style reforms and founded St Petersburg in 1703; Catherine II extended the empire to the Black Sea. Russia defeated Napoleon in 1812, yet serfdom lasted until its abolition in 1861. Late industrialization, inequality and military defeat weakened tsarist rule.
The Soviet Union and modern Russia
The 1917 revolution brought the Bolsheviks to power, and the Soviet Union was founded in 1922. Under Stalin, forced industrialization came with famine, terror and labor camps; Soviet peoples suffered immense losses in the Second World War. The USSR dissolved in 1991. The Russian Federation went through a hard economic transition, centralization of power under Vladimir Putin, the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
