History of Antigua and Barbuda
The first inhabitants
Thousands of years before Europeans arrived, Archaic hunter-gatherers lived on Antigua. Later, Arawak-speaking peoples from the Orinoco basin migrated up the Antilles, bringing cassava farming, pottery and dugout-canoe fishing. The more powerful Caribs (Kalinago) also came to dominate the region. In 1493, on his second voyage, Christopher Columbus sighted the island and named it after the church of Santa María de la Antigua in Seville. The Spanish, however, never settled permanently, deterred in part by the island’s scarce fresh water and by the resistance of its Indigenous inhabitants.
A British sugar colony
In 1632 English settlers from St. Kitts founded a colony on Antigua, first growing tobacco before turning wholesale to sugar cane in the late seventeenth century. The Codrington family leased Barbuda to supply the plantations with food and labour. Tens of thousands of enslaved Africans were brought to the islands and forced to work under brutal conditions. In 1736 a planned uprising led by an enslaved man named Court, also known as Prince Klaas, was discovered and savagely suppressed. Meanwhile English Harbour became Britain’s key naval base in the Caribbean, where Horatio Nelson served in the 1780s.
From emancipation to independence
In 1834 Antigua was one of the few British colonies to grant full freedom to the enslaved without an intervening “apprenticeship” period, though working people’s lives remained hard. The twentieth century saw the rise of a strong labour movement led by Vere Cornwall Bird, who would become the first prime minister. Antigua became an associated state of Britain in 1967 and gained independence, together with Barbuda, on 1 November 1981. Tourism replaced sugar as the backbone of the economy. In 2017 Hurricane Irma destroyed most homes on Barbuda, forcing almost the entire population to evacuate temporarily to Antigua.
